Description

The Family Sign Language Website is a project for families that have deaf children. It's a resource site for parents to learn and discover how to help their child's development and how to improve communication within the family environment. The site includes diary video footage of parents showing how they involve their children in communication on a day-to-day basis. There are also activities and games to engage the children with the website also, but mostly this is a resource tool for adults.

This was a massive project that I began in 2009 and was completed early 2010. The project was brought to me by a good friend of mine who I work with often who had been approached to build this website for the client NDCS. What he needed from me was an illustration of an environment that would appeal to adults and children alike. The client had suggested a town of some sort where different locations could be utilized for different activities within the site.

I suggested that a seaside town may be a good image to use. As a child I loved my trips to the seaside and still do as an adult, I figured that it could appeal to both adults and children as an image. I then submitted a series of drawings and ideas for how the illustration could take shape. This was the most involved development process I have ever experienced. I am used to running with an idea and handing it over, but the clients were very keen to control the shaping of the site and its contents so the discussions went on for weeks.

Eventually after many months the project was completed and this is the final image that is used in the website. I'm very proud of this work. Not only was it for a very worthy and interesting website, but because so much care and attention went into the level of detail in the illustration.

The whole image was drawn in vectors so that the illustration could be zoomed in and out of without losing clarity. To see the illustration and the website in action please go here and take a look at it: [link]

Time: 9 months
Medium: Photoshop Vectors
Reference: The main layout of the town is loosely based on the british seaside town of Broadstairs which is an extremely picturesque place.
