I met Heath Ledger in 2000. I was working on From Hell and he was shooting A Knights Tale which were both being shot in and around Prague.
It was one of the best and worst times of my life - I was in a Hollywood movie, shooting scenes with Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane but behind all the glitz and the glamour there was a sour taste to the whole experience: I (unlike many of the other actors working on the film), had been out in Prague for nearly three months, it was lonely living out of a hotel room and I had terrible anxiety and self doubt with regards to my part in the movie itself - coupled with some unpleasant incidents on set, I felt very isolated and vulnerable.
One evening during that time, some of the actors from my film had arranged to meet some of the actors from the other film at a night spot in Prague and I happened to be in that very same bar when they arrived. Out of everyone who was there, it was Heath who asked me if I would like to join their party, some of the guys had said hello to me when they arrived and Heath had deduced I must have been working on the other film and that I was on my own.
I had a really great time that night, and on a couple occasions Heath invited me over to his apartment to hang out with his friends. It was on one of those occasions that this photo was taken. Heath had discovered that I was an artist and that I was also a photographer and he had with him an old bashed up camera which he handed to me and asked if I wouldn't mind taking some shots of him and Heather Graham.
That will be my enduring memory of him - how he was completely genuine and his startling kindness - he made me feel included when I had been excluded and made my memories of Prague a great deal happier than they might have been... I can't imagine how devastated the people who knew him well must be.
I wanted to share this with the dA community as it's been reported that far right extremists intend to picket and disrupt his funeral. Know this, Heath Ledger was a good person, a kind person: please don't let anyone persuade you otherwise. His loss should be mourned, not mocked.
First, the photo is a strong visual, nicely composed with effective lighting.
Second, I had no idea you were an actor, cheers...now I am going to have to get a copy of From Hell and watch it!
The closest I came to that movie was one day outside Woodstock where a theater showing the film advertised on their marque: "Seats From Hell Available Now!" I had to take a photo, it was just too bloody good to pass up. (If I can find it I will post it here. )
As to your explanation of the background of the photo, it is a very moving and powerful commentary on the superficiality of how people often view and treat one another. You were a good friend to Heath, and still are...that goes a long way.
Good man, Bryon, and thanks for your touching insight.
I've never really cried over an actor dying before... but Heath Ledger's death was very unexpected and heartbreaking for me. Every time I feel this way, I always wish the same thing... that I could have gotten to know them better personally. He sounded like a great guy. He almost sounds like some of the people I'm friends with now, cause when people find out that I love to take pictures, they ask me to take their picture almost every time. teehee Your picture is beautiful, btw. The pose if perfect, and the lighting almost makes it look like a drawing. It's really nice.
wow thanks for sharing your story there is some horrid rumours circulating about him but I don't believe a word of them but I believe what you say as it sounds just like him I hope everyone leaves his memory alone and his family it must be awful having to hear such filth. As a photography fan I think this is a lovely photo too. again thanks for sharing

Thanks Denis - the lighting was pure chance, but I was able to loiter for the right moment.
Well, the acting thing is interesting - I actually went to college and studied for four years a BA Hons degree in Fine Art, Theatre and Film. It was the perfect course as it was the only performance art degree that allowed me to study Fine Art alongside my first love; theatre and film performance. Theatre and Film was my major and I always wanted to be an actor - I did plenty of acting on stage, some short films, wrote and directed a couple of plays (one was filmed by the BBC), but From Hell was my only feature film as an actor, and it was the experience that drove me back to being an artist.
My official role in the movie is Robert Best the newspaper reporter - my scenes are pretty fleeting so you have to be careful to catch them, but the reason I was out in Prague for practically the duration of the film was because I also played the body double of Jack the Ripper - so if there is a scene with Jack in it and you don't see his face, then it was me.... I was even on the film poster as Jack, walking away in my top hat and tails. [link]
I would love to see that photo you took in Woodstock, if you find it please post it, it would be awesome to see it.
Anyway - thank you for your words (as always)... in the end I was just lucky to have met such a nice a kind and gentle spirit.
