All He Held Deer

Something a bit different....

This painting was a commission for my sister and her partner who wanted to gift a painting to an Uncle who used to keep deer on his land in Germany, but because of poor health, he was forced to give up his deer.

I decided not to paint the background from the photo I was working from as I decided it would detract from the subject matter too much. I hadn't considered painting it with a white background before I started. That decision came later, but I was glad that I made that decision. The deers really stand out, I especially love the shapes the deer make against the negative space.

This painting is to serve as a reminder of the animals he loved so much. I used a photo of his actual deer for reference.
